Moooooooo
This is one of my more important non-professional achievements. After Graydon's relatively speaking harmless NICU stay and seeing all the other babies and their parents in really tough situations, I have been really glad to be able to support preemies and other needy babies in this way. I have all sorts of mixed feelings about that phase of my life coming to a close.

Spätzle!
Late Friday, I was unexpectedly spared the fate of leaving for a work trip mid-afternoon on Saturday (woohoo!). So what did I do with my newfound time? I made Spätzle! Ok, a true connoisseur would call them Knöpfle (Spätzle are the spaghetti-shaped variety that you extrude from a press) but these freeze better. All in all I made approximately 6kg of Schwabian pasta - one of which we ate that evening, along with a big pot of pork filets in mushroom cream sauce (some of which also made it into the freezer). Too bad I don't have any photos of the crew enjoying the meal (they did). Four dozen eggs and a 5-lb bag of flour later... cleanup was a pain. But now we have five more meals in the freezer!

Graydon at Camp Tanner 2016
We're a little behind the times on the blog because Graydon is enjoying his first day of 1st grade today, but here are a few photos of his turn last week at Camp Tanner: enjoying snickerdoodle cookies, a whopping $13.30 from the scrap yard for all his aluminum, and some real work repairing bird houses for Dripping Springs. It was kind of a soggy week, but they still had lots of fun!

It's an... Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny...
...Blue and yellow polka dot bikini... That she wore for the first time today!
She only wore the top for a few minutes - it's quite ridiculous, actually. But we couldn't resist the photo op. Matching band-aids came from our 15-months well-check appointment (all's well).

Funky fungi of Ste Emelie
Ste Em is fertile ground for shrooms. The first two sets just look neat - the last ones (chanterelles aka Pfifferlinge) are edible and actually quite delicious - hence their backdrop is a plate. :)

Hair milestone!
Portia officially has enough hair now to hold a hair clip! Which is good, because her hair was starting to fall into her eyes. Wiley was with me at the store when we bought them so of course he wanted to wear one, too!

Saturday bike ride
We participated in Bike Austin's "Hottest Day of the Year" bike ride on Saturday. The ride has a few different starting points, each at a city pool and then pool-hops its way across town until you arrive at a central location where everyone gathers for pizza and drinks. It really was a scorcher, reaching well into the upper 90s. Unfortunately, two of the three pools we were slated to visit were closed (one due to a broken pump, and the other due to thunder...) but we did have a lovely swim at the one remaining pool! Then, after the party, we had to figure out how to get ourselves home from all the way across town. Turns out that finally gave us a reason to try out the bus line that stops right in front of our house! So we hopped back on our bikes and headed a couple of miles downtown to the bus stop. It had started raining by then, so we got pretty soaked. Then we packed our three bikes onto the rack on the front of the bus, folded up the trailer, and hopped on. The bus ride was the highlight of the day for Wiley and Portia. And Graydon was a real trooper for biking the whole way (11 or 12 miles)! Ironically on "the hottest day of the year", I froze on the way home - an hour on an air-conditioned bus after a sopping wet bike ride was no fun for Mami!

Little Girl With Big Dreams
This was Portia's favorite boat in the showroom. She has very good taste. But she was disappointed when she found out we would *not* be buying the $153,000 top of the line wake boarding boat...

Canadian Carpentry
We came across two gentlemen building a bridge on part of the Canadian national trail. They harvested the trees on the other side of the lake, floated them across, and are building the bridge entirely with what they can carry in themselves. We were all quite impressed with the craftsmanship and really enjoyed talking with them about how they did everything.

Bear Trail
Graydon's big enough to go on real hikes now. This morning we hiked a beautiful 6km on the bear trail.
